Place lamps on stable surfaces away from flammable materials.
Use a light bulb with the correct wattage for the lamp.
Use a protective cover to prevent the bulb from shattering if the lamp is subjected to impact.
ELECTRICAL POWER OUTSIDE THE HOME
Electrical appliances installed outdoors, such as on porches, must be weatherproof.
Do not use extension wiring for neon lights or decorative flashing lights.
Do not operate electrical appliances outdoors when the ground is wet unless the equipment is certified for such use.
Do not use extension wiring for outdoor lighting.
POWER CABLES
Do not touch power cables as they can cause electric shock and severe burns.
Keep ladders, especially metal ladders, away from overhead power lines.
Report damaged power cables immediately and mark the area to warn others to stay away.
WARNING SIGNS
Identify electrical problems before they result in electric shock or fire. Watch for the following warning signs:
Recurring problems such as blown fuses or repeated power interruptions.
Experiencing electric shocks when touching electrical appliances.
A burning rubber smell coming from electrical equipment.
Flickering lights. Do not wait for the problem to worsen. Contact Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) or a qualified electrician immediately.
ELECTRIC SHOCK STATISTICS
Every year, electric shocks and electrical fires result in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. Following basic electrical safety practices can significantly reduce these risks.
FUSES AND CIRCUITS
If a fuse blows or a wiring fault interrupts the power supply, do not simply reset or replace it without identifying and correcting the cause of the problem.
Every fuse in your home must be correctly rated to handle the electrical load. When replacing a fuse, ensure the new fuse has the correct rating for the circuit.
Irons and other heating appliances consume a high electrical current. Do not plug more than one high-power appliance into the same socket or circuit.
EARTH LEAKAGE CIRCUIT BREAKER (ELCB)
An Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) helps reduce the risk of electric shock by disconnecting the power supply more quickly than a standard fuse when an electrical fault occurs. ELCBs are affordable and should be installed in every home. Test the ELCB monthly by pressing the Test button.
ELECTRICAL SOCKETS
Use only approved three-pin electrical sockets and plugs.
Ensure that plugs fit securely into the electrical socket.
If you have young children at home, install childproof safety covers on unused electrical sockets.
ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
Purchase only electrical appliances that carry a SIRIM certification label.
Keep heat-generating appliances, such as irons, at least one metre away from curtains, furniture, and other combustible materials.
Unplug small appliances such as toasters and coffee makers when they are not in use.
Provide sufficient ventilation around electrical equipment such as computers and stereo systems to prevent overheating.
WIRING AND EXTENSION CORDS
Use electrical wiring and extension cords according to their rated capacity.
Replace damaged or worn wiring immediately.
Ensure electrical cords do not obstruct walkways or run underneath carpets.
Use only SIRIM-approved extension cords and electrical connectors.
